The Safe Shop have found that the sending of printed Christmas cards first originated in London in 1843. The first Christmas card designed for sale was by London artist John Calcott Horsley.
John Calcott Horsley was commissioned by Sir Henry Cole, a wealthy British businessman, who wanted a card he could send to friends to wish them a merry Christmas.
Of the original one thousand cards printed for Henry Cole, twelve exist today in private collections. A card is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the inscription reads: ?Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you.?
People used to exchange handwritten holiday greetings. They first gave them in person then by post office. Printed cards soon became the rage in England. With the marketing of attractive commercial cards the postal burden worsened.
Writing Christmas cards should be a fun task. Although it takes more time, a handwritten Christmas card or letter is much more personal than a typed letter. If the greeting is too long, or there are too many to write, a handwritten card may not be possible. A handwritten signature and address on the envelope should at least be hand written.
Nothing beats the sweet pleasure of a carefully crafted Christmas card, written for a special person during the festive season.
One of the most powerful and sincerest forms of communication that we see very little of today is letter or Christmas card writing, written on real paper and delivered to the recipients post boxes either by hand, or thanks to the postman.
Make a mail box look festive this season! An artificial or real pine garland wrapped around the box?s post and across the top of the mailbox is a fresh, country-inspired look; secure the ends of the garland with greening pins. Add some plastic Christmas trinkets such as candy canes, berries, pinecone-shaped picks or ornaments. Insert them into the garland. Tie red ribbons into bows around the garland as a sweet touch. Light the way for Christmas party guests by wrapping red and green or elegant white string lights around the post instead of a garland; use an extension cord running to a porch or garage as a power source.
Mailbox covers are a fun way to decorate your post box. Magnetic mailbox covers are easy to apply and easy to remove. There are many collections of Christmas themes available to purchase online. Consumers have a wide variety of decorations and embellishments to choose from. The average British family spends around ?200 each year on Christmas decorations.
